Why Your Wireless Earbuds Keep Falling Out (and How to Make Them Stay)

Wireless earbuds fall out for three reasons: the ear tip is not sealing in your canal, the bud is the wrong shape or weight for your ear, or they are not seated properly. Nine times out of ten it is the tip. Get the right size and type of tip sealed in correctly and most falling-out problems disappear. Below is how to work out which of the three is happening to you, and how to fix each one, from someone who makes earbuds for a living and wears them on the tools every day.

Why do my earbuds keep falling out?

If your buds work loose, slide down, or drop out the second you turn your head or break a sweat, it is almost never bad luck. It is one of three things:

  • The tip is too small, so it never seals and the bud slowly walks out of your ear.
  • The bud is too heavy or the wrong shape, so gravity and movement lever it out.
  • You are not seating it right, or the tip type does not suit your ear canal.

Work through them in that order. Most people never get past the first one, because the tip is the fix for the majority of cases.

Reason 1: your ear tips are not sealing

A wireless earbud stays in because the tip grips the walls of your ear canal, not because the bud wedges against the outer ear. If the tip is too small, there is no grip. The bud feels loose from the first second, the bass sounds thin, and it drifts out over a few minutes.

The fix is to go up a size until the bud feels planted and the sound goes full and rich. That change in sound is your seal telling you it worked. Most decent earbuds ship with at least three sizes for this reason. PureBuds Pro come with small, medium and large silicone tips, and for a lot of people the small or medium silicone alone does the job.

If silicone still will not hold, switch to memory foam. Foam expands to the exact shape of your canal instead of asking your canal to match a fixed dome, so it grips harder and seals deeper. It is the go-to for narrow canals, odd-shaped ears, and anyone who moves a lot. Every pair of PureBuds Pro includes a set of PureSeal memory foam tips for exactly this.

Fit foam tips the same way you fit your PPE earplugs. Roll the tip down thin between your finger and thumb, pop it into your ear while it is still squashed, then hold it there for a few seconds. It expands to fill your canal and locks in a seal you will not get any other way.

Reason 2: the buds are the wrong shape or weight

Even with a perfect tip, some buds are fighting you. Two things matter here: shape and weight.

Stem-style buds, the AirPods shape, hang weight outside your ear. The longer the stem, the more leverage there is to pull the bud out when you move, sweat, or knock it with a hard hat. Bullet-style buds sit flush and keep the weight inside the canal where it is anchored. For staying put, bullet wins nearly every time.

Weight is the other half. Anything much over 5 grams a bud will slowly slide out of an average ear, even with a good seal. Heavy metal-bodied buds feel flash in the hand and then let you down on a long shift.

Bud style What happens Why
Compact bullet, under 5g Stays put Sits flush, weight held inside the canal
Long-stem buds Works loose Weight hangs outside the ear and levers out
Heavy metal-bodied buds Falls out Too heavy for the tip to hold on a long day
Person wearing compact bullet-style wireless earbuds that stay in while moving at the gym
A flush, light bud stays seated when you move. A heavy stem bud does not.

Reason 3: you are not seating them right

Sometimes the gear is fine and the technique is the problem. Ear canals are not straight tubes, they bend, and everyone's are a slightly different shape (here is the anatomy if you are curious). A tip that is just pushed straight in sits shallow and drops out.

Seat them like this: pop the bud in, then give it a small twist back and rotate to lock the tip into the canal. For a deeper seal, reach over your head with the other hand and gently pull the top of your ear up and back as you insert. That straightens the canal and lets the tip sit properly. Do it in front of a mirror the first few times.

One more thing: a lot of people have two slightly different ears. If one bud always falls and the other never does, try a bigger tip on the loose side only. Mixing tip sizes left and right is normal and it is what the extra sizes are for.

Quick fixes you can try right now

  • Go up one tip size until the sound turns full and rich. That is your seal.
  • Swap to memory foam if silicone will not hold, then roll the tip down thin, insert it, and hold while it expands, just like a PPE earplug.
  • Twist to lock the bud in, do not just push it straight.
  • Pull your ear up and back as you insert to open the canal.
  • Run a different tip size on your looser ear.
  • Clean the tips. Wax and grime kill grip. Here is how to clean earbuds without wrecking them.

When it is the buds, not you

If you have tried every tip and every trick and they still will not stay, the buds are the problem, not your ears. A stay-put earbud is compact, bullet-shaped, light, and comes with a proper range of tips including foam. That is the whole design brief behind PureBuds Pro, and it is why they hold up mowing, on site, at the gym, and on a long drive.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my earbuds keep falling out?

Almost always the ear tip is too small to seal, so there is nothing gripping the walls of your canal. Going up a tip size fixes most cases. If it does not, the bud may be too heavy or the wrong shape for your ear, or it is not being seated deep enough.

How do I stop my earbuds falling out when running or working?

Get a full seal with the right tip first, then use memory foam tips for extra grip during movement, and seat the bud with a small twist to lock it in. Compact, lightweight bullet-style buds stay put far better than long-stem or heavy buds when you are active.

Are memory foam ear tips better for keeping earbuds in?

Often yes. Foam expands to the exact shape of your ear canal, so it grips harder and seals deeper than a fixed silicone dome. It is the best option for narrow canals and for anyone who moves a lot. The trade-off is foam wears faster and needs replacing every few months.

Do smaller ears make earbuds fall out more?

They can, because the largest included tip is often still too big, so the bud rests on the outer ear instead of sealing in the canal. Compact buds with small silicone and foam tip options solve it. There is more detail in our small ears guide.
